Movie night...

Went with the Powerhouse girls to watch "One Night With The King". I was a little wary at first, since I'd read the book and enjoyed it... which usually means the movie will disappoint. I'd also heard some not-so-favorable reviews, but some enthusiastic ones as well, so I suppose I was curious. So we went. It wasn't brilliant, but it wasn't awful either. I admit I rather enjoyed it for the most part, if only for the sappy Hallmark-ish romantic slush. I do appreciate a good unabashedly romantic movie every now and then. (Anne of Green Gables, anyone?) And hey, the movie was based on a whole book of the Bible, which qualified it for a church outing in lieu of a study!

The king was strangely unwashed and sweaty... and we assume his bare chest was on display for most of the movie mainly to distract us from the fact that he had a mild speech impediment accent and no eyebrows. And the chick who played Esther was very cute... although her strange American with faux-British bits was really odd. But as with most accents, you get used to it. It was really theatrical and Grand Old Skool... big grand sets, lush costumes (my favorite bit), lots of flowers (ankle-deep carpets of rose petals and marigolds.... mmm...) and... well, Denethor. In fact, Denethor AND Gimli... any movie with John Noble, John Rhys-Davies and Omar Sharif in it has got to have a little bit of Old Skool Theatricality Cred, I says.
